Tod Dimmick

Freelance writer and photographer

I write about food, wine, organic gardening, travel, and family from a practical, budget-oriented perspective. After hearing me evangelize about the fun of pulling carrots, making bread, or a Rhone that tastes like charcoal, my friends sometimes accuse me of being overly romantic. That observation is probably true, these days the simple things feel more important than ever.

I am the author of several books in the Complete Idiot’s Guide series. My Guide to 20-minute Meals (Alpha, 2002) met such strong demand on publication that it went through multiple printings. The Guide to 5-Minute Appetizers (2003) is a must-have kitchen reference for those who love to entertain but have limited time. My Guide to Cooking for Guys (2004) with cooking inspiration and humor for kitchen-shy guys, has been mentioned in the New York Times and the Boston Globe, and can be found on bookstore shelves from Boston to Sydney, (as in Australia). That one is my favorite so far.

All of these food-oriented projects made me think a lot about what we eat, and by the time my Quick and Easy Low Carb Meals was published (2005), I had become an enthusiastic (and probably a little obsessive) consumer of local and organic produce.  I increasingly focused my food writing on topics related to a healthy diet, and I have watched with delight the evolution of many purchase decisions from those based on price to those based on quality and provenance. The growing numbers of consumers demanding locally grown food (epiphany alert!) need practical guidance.  In 2009, I co-founded 1000Radishes, a website and mobile application created to support the locavore movement.  My lofty title there is The Foodie, and I will  administer the “Seasonal Recipes” blog.  Go check it out, and add your name to the mailing list for the upcoming launch!

I
also provide recipes and content for the Will Work For Food Project, the site and blog devoted to supporting local farms.

On the decidedly more indulgent side, I also create a Restaurant Recipes for the Phantom Gourmet television show. The Phantom crew films these dishes in my kitchen west of Boston.

In 1991, I started Tasting Times as a food and wine newsletter for busy people on a budget. Now online (tastingtimes.com) the Tasting Times Wine Hotlist 'zine and the Wine Minute blog have an international following. Through ongoing feedback with subscribers, each explores a wine & food topic with humor and irreverence. Themes range from unusual varietals to the “Zen of Zin”, and the rise of terrific new organic wines.

In 2000, I signed on with WZ.com, the (then) well-known online guide site, to design and write The Busy Person’s Guide to Gourmet Cooking on a Budget web page. In less than a year, my email newsletter for this site grew to over 75,000 subscribers. I am also the author of the e-book Gourmet Cooking on a Budget, made Simple, Healthy, and Fun (WZ.com).

I love photography almost as much as I love to write. Several of the published examples above also feature my images.

I speak on wine and food-related topics, and have been interviewed for national print media, radio, and television. I am also a member of the Association of Food Journalists. I earned my BA from Union College, and my Masters in Business Administration from the University of Edinburgh.

My world view is informed by time living in Japan and Scotland, and travel -whenever possible- to other parts of the world.
